The Art of Remembering

This month, our high school history classes are learning about the tragic attacks on our nation that occurred 25 years ago on September 11th. After an immersive study, Mrs. Howard’s students were tasked with creating art “blocks” interpreting what they learned.

The results are quite moving. Some pieces pay homage to the heroes while others honor the memory of the victims.

The events of that day left scars on our nation; scars our students have no firsthand memory of, but they are scars with stories that need to be told to future generations.

From the triumphs of space exploration to the rise and fall of regimes and, most importantly, the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, we need to teach history to our students. Since these events leave life-changing marks on our culture, it’s even more important to teach them from a biblical perspective.

As Christ-followers, God’s perspective is vital to navigating the difficulties of this life. In the midst of reflecting on 9/11, one of our students’ art reminded us:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 ESV

And another recalls verses from Isaiah:

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”

Let us never forget that He is near, and He remembers us.
