Cheerful Givers

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:5-7
We’ve had all kinds of cheerful giving this past week! Giving of resources, of talents, and of time.
This week we finalized our schoolwide community service project when our mentor students and their buddies cheerfully and carefully packed 100 backpacks for children in foster care. Our parents and others donated items and resources to fill the backpacks with thoughtful and needed items. Our art students even created encouraging and inspirational posters to help the recipients personalize their rooms.
Last week, our school community came together for one of the school’s oldest and largest fundraisers: the Hoop-A-Thon. Students and staff shot hoops and hula-hooped to raise funds for the school. Parents, grandparents, and friends donated money, cheered, and volunteered to support the students. It was SO much fun seeing students of all ages participate!
During this Holy Week, how appropriate is it for us to give cheerfully and teach our students to do the same? Hebrews 12:2b tells us, “For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus saw the joy in facing an unfathomable sacrifice–taking on our sin, guilt, and shame so that we can be reconciled to God.
Happy Resurrection Sunday!
