Recently, a group of students has begun gathering during their lunch period to engage in intellectual discourse, using their words and knowledge to argue predetermined topics. This gathering was formed to allow students to strengthen their public speaking skills, engage in healthy and respectful conversations, and encourage the use of rhetoric. The club is supervised by secondary science and history teacher Chris Oliver. Some topics that have been discussed include whether uniforms should be implemented in schools or if college should be a free service provided by the government.
My name is Miles Steptoe and I am the founder of the Debate Club. Through months of conversations with my peers and teachers, I realized that the student body lacked an organized platform to pursue the world of argumentation through the structure of logic and understanding. This club represents my passion for the subject, and I want to share that passion with everyone else that I can. I continue to work with Mr. Oliver to further improve and oversee the club as we share the same interest and love for debate.
