The long run

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…” Hebrews 12:1
Cross Country is a sport that requires physical endurance and mental toughness. The courses are unpredictable; each one has its unique challenges and terrain. Add in the elements–rain, snow, heat, or wind–a runner never quite knows what to expect. They have to run with the finish line in mind.
But cross-country runners often experience incredible support during a meet, even from opposing teams’ fans. Just like this verse in Hebrews, they have witnesses cheering them on along the course.
That was the case this week when our middle school cross country team hosted a meet on campus. Up to the last runner, spectators cheered and encouraged the athletes. While there were some amazing performances by the runners, the fact that all of the competitors endured to the end earned the admiration of the onlookers.
We’ve had a lot of sporting events lately and this blog post is reflective of that. But athletics is only one part of our students lives and it’s our mission to equip students in all areas of their lives. (Watch a story about our soccer team’s recent academic recognition here.)
If we can teach our students to persevere spiritually, academically, physically, and emotionally, we will be preparing them for the long run.
